Could perhaps also be seen as an argument for model coupling: developing (or fundamentally updating) software packages is fairly expensive and takes time. Using a framework to couple proven models to study new phenomena is usually fair bit cheaper and faster ("80-20" argument, although I'd guess in this case it might be closer to "95-5"?).
