The conceptual view of an e-Science HMR environment is depicted in the Figure below, where resources (e.g., hardware, design and simulation methods and tools) are provided by various institutions, services are aiming at organizing the use of resources and applications, and application services are accessible via portals.

To satisfy the specific HMR requirements and according to the DRIHMS surveys, four application service families have to be provided:
- Simulation services: enabling users to run simulation tools, as meteorological models, hydrological and hydraulic models, stochastic downscaling and data fusion codes, according to the rationale of the hydrometeorological probabilistic forecasting chain;
- Model Gallery services: allowing visualization of the results provided by HMR modelling and post-processing tools. Gallery services will enable the user to understand how to use and setup a particular model to solve a particular HMR problem: it will represent an example for others who were interested in solving similar problems;
- Teaching and Learning services: giving access to a library of multimedia educational information. The simulation tools will be supported by tutorials, manuals and demonstrations, along with printed, video and audio media describing modeling techniques and principles. This material will include interactive demonstrations targeted at members of the public and other non-specialists. Material from workshops and conferences, and continuing education courses, will also be included;
- Data Access services: including dedicated services, such as the CUAHSI HIS for time series data and the Thematic Real-time Environmental Distributed Data Services (THREDDS) for accessing dynamic grid data corresponding to severe hydrometeorological events into an HMR e-Science environment data repository and needed for calibration, validation, or evaluation of the suitability of different modeling tools.
